FIBRE TO YARN PROCESS: Bast Fibre
1. Pulling
The flax plant is pulled from the soil
2. Retting
Micro-organisms dissolve the pectines and loosen the fibres
3. Harvesting
The flax is tied together in large balls and harvested
4. Scutching
The stem is broken to separate the fibre from the shives (wood particles from the stems)
5. Hackling
Pins comb the flax until only the purest fibre remains. The long fibres and short fibres are separated from each other
6. Spinning
The fibres are turned into yarn by winding them together
