Chapter description

This chapter introduces the fundamental characteristics of yarn and explores how fibre composition, yarn construction and processing influence its behaviour and performance in knitting. Students discover how fibres are transformed into yarn and how processes such as blending, dyeing and finishing treatments can alter the properties and appearance of the final material.

Through the study of yarn count, pilling and yarn selection, students learn to analyse yarns and understand how different characteristics affect their suitability for specific knitting applications. The chapter concludes with a practical case study, allowing students to apply their knowledge and make informed yarn choices based on design, technical and functional requirements.

Teaching approach

Approach this chapter as an exploration of yarn rather than a purely theoretical introduction. The aim is to help students understand that every yarn has a combination of characteristics that influence how it behaves during knitting and ultimately affects the appearance, feel and performance of the finished textile.

The chapter should follow the Theory → Show → Experience methodology throughout.

1. Theory — Build the foundation

Introduce the key concepts and terminology step by step. Explain the journey from fibre to yarn, and how factors such as fibre composition, blending, yarn structure, count, dyeing and treatments influence the final material.

Avoid presenting all information as facts to memorise. Instead, continuously connect each concept to its practical relevance in knitting.

For example:

How does this fibre behave?
How does this influence the yarn?
How will that yarn behave on the knitting machine?
What will the final fabric look and feel like?

2. Show — Make the material visible

Whenever possible, support the theory with physical yarn samples, fibres, knitted samples, images, videos and machine demonstrations.

Encourage students to observe differences in:

  • appearance

  • thickness

  • texture

  • structure

  • elasticity

  • softness

  • hairiness

  • regularity

Use samples to demonstrate that yarn characteristics are not only theoretical concepts but can be seen, felt and tested.

3. Experience — Let students investigate

Students should regularly handle and compare materials themselves.

Instead of simply telling students that two yarns have different properties, ask them to:

  • examine the yarns;

  • compare their structures;

  • feel and stretch them;

  • identify differences;

  • make predictions about their knitting behaviour;

  • test those predictions where possible.

This allows students to develop their own material awareness and observation skills.
